Journal prompt
What's your go-to way to relax?
fun
Plenty of things are sold as relaxing that aren't, especially for you specifically. This prompt asks for honesty: what actually softens you, when you do it, and how it feels in your body after twenty minutes. Knowing your real answer is a small life skill.
The more honestly you name your real relaxers, the less you'll fall back on the ones that only pretend.
Why this helps
Writing your true go-to ways to relax separates 'rest theatre' (scrolling, snacks, half-watched shows) from real rest (walk, bath, a specific book, a friend). Both have a place, but only the second leaves you actually restored — and writing reveals which is which.
When to use it
Useful when you've been chronically tired despite 'resting', after a stretch of poor weekends, or when you're choosing how to spend a free evening you don't want to waste.
How to answer
List 2–3 things that actually relax you.
Note 1 thing that pretends to but doesn't.
Describe how your body feels 20 minutes in.
Notice when you last used a real one.
Plan one for this week.
Other ways to ask the same thing
What actually rests you?
What's your honest, not aesthetic, way to unwind?
What soothes you in a way that lasts past the evening?
If you get stuck
Don't write what sounds wholesome if it isn't true for you. Maybe baths don't work; maybe organising a drawer does. The point isn't to look serene — it's to know your actual nervous-system 'down' button so you can press it when you need it most.
Example entry
What actually relaxes me: a slow walk without my phone, a hot shower with the lights low, a long call with my sister. Pretends to but doesn't: scrolling Reels (leaves me wired and vacant). After 20 minutes: walk = shoulders lower; shower = breathing slower; call = mind quieter. Last used a real one: Tuesday walk. This week: phone-down walk Thursday after work; bath Sunday night before the week starts.
