What invention would make your life easier?
fun
This is the playful kind of prompt. Invent something — silly, plausible, magical, mundane — that would noticeably ease your week. It doesn't have to be a billion-dollar idea. It just has to be your idea.
The nice surprise: the thing you invent often points at where you're quietly overworking yourself.
Why this helps
Designing an imaginary invention shows you, in playful form, what feels harder than it should. The friction you'd remove with magic is usually friction you could lessen with a small real change. The play loosens the seriousness and makes the underlying problem easier to admit.
When to use it
Lovely on a Friday evening when your brain is too tired for heavy reflection, on a slow Sunday with coffee, or any time you want to write something that ends with a smile. Also a great shared prompt if you keep a journal alongside someone.
How to answer
Be silly first; refine later.
Describe what the invention does in one sentence.
Name the friction it would remove from your week.
Ask: is there a low-tech, real version you could try?
Decide whether to keep the silly version too.
Other ways to ask the same thing
What gadget, magical or boring, would you want most?
What's the friction in your week you'd most love to vanish?
If you had a single 'easy button,' what would it solve?
If you get stuck
Some people resist this prompt because they feel it's frivolous. That resistance is the very reason to write it. A bit of play is data; people who can't admit what's tiring them rarely change it. The silly answer is also a tender answer.
Example entry
A small device on the wall that, at exactly seven p.m., gently turns off all my notifications and dims the lights — and won't let me undo it for an hour. The friction it removes is my own constant decision-making about when to stop working. The low-tech real version: charging my phone in another room from seven, with a kitchen timer set for an hour. I'll try it tonight. I'm also keeping the silly version, because I want one.
