Courage doesn't always feel like courage in the moment — sometimes it just feels like 'I have to'. This prompt asks you to look back over your week or your year and identify the conditions in which courage actually shows up in you. The pattern is usually less heroic and more replicable than you'd expect.
Knowing your conditions makes courage less of a mood and more of a practice.
Naming when you feel most courageous lets you stop relying on a 'brave mood' to do hard things. It surfaces the structural conditions — for someone else's benefit, in a familiar setting, after a clear next step — and lets you build them into the next decision. It also separates your real courage from someone else's, which is often what you've been measuring against.
Useful before a hard ask or hard conversation, when you've been avoiding something for weeks, or in stretches where you've felt smaller than usual. Also good after a notable brave act, to capture the conditions before they fade.

Recall two or three times you acted bravely, large or small.

Look for what they had in common — setting, motive, structure.

Identify the type of courage most native to you (for others, for principle, for honesty).

It's easy to disqualify your own bravery because it doesn't look like a movie. Most real courage is unglamorous: the email, the no, the asking, the sitting with someone in a hard hour. Notice the small versions. They're the ones you can build on.
Two acts: telling a friend a hard truth about her partner last spring; advocating clearly for a junior colleague in a meeting last month. In common: someone else's wellbeing was at the centre, and I had a clear sentence ready. My native courage is on behalf of others — easier than for myself. Conditions: a clear stake, a prepared sentence, a small audience. Upcoming application: a personal ask for a raise. I'll treat myself as the 'other person' I'm advocating for, write the sentence, and use a small (one-to-one) audience.
