What would your "perfect year" look like?
future
A 'perfect year' isn't a list of achievements; it's a texture. How does it feel, what does an ordinary Wednesday look like, who is in it, what is missing from it. This prompt asks you to describe that — and to find the small parts of that year you could start now.
Describing the texture of the year you want is the start of building it.
Why this helps
Writing your perfect year in texture (not just goals) bypasses the trap of 'achievement years that feel hollow'. It surfaces what you actually want from a year — rhythm, relationships, rest, depth — which is more useful for designing the year than a target list.
When to use it
Useful at year-end, on birthdays, when you're tired of vague 'big year' fantasies and want a livable one. Also useful mid-year when you've drifted from the year you'd planned and want to recover its feel.
How to answer
Describe how the year feels (3–5 adjectives).
Describe a typical ordinary day inside it.
Name relationships that are central.
Name 1–2 things absent from it on purpose.
Choose one element to begin now.
Other ways to ask the same thing
How does your ideal year feel, not just look?
What is the rhythm of a year you'd be proud of?
What does an ordinary Tuesday look like in your good year?
If you get stuck
Avoid pure goal lists ('hit X, earn Y, lose Z'). Goal-only years often feel disappointing even when you hit the goals, because the lived texture wasn't designed. Mix some goals if you like, but write the felt experience as well — that's what you'll actually live.
Example entry
My perfect year feels: spacious, focused, warm, less anxious. An ordinary Wednesday: slow morning, three or four hours of deep work, a long walk, dinner cooked at home, an evening with a book. Central relationships: my partner (more present, less distracted), my brother (a quarterly visit), two close friends (monthly long calls). Absent on purpose: chronic over-commitment; the low-grade panic of always being behind. Begin now: protect one evening a week that is screen-free and book-only.
