If you describe today through your thoughts, you'll get a story you've already told yourself. Describe it through your senses, and you'll get something closer to what actually happened. This prompt asks you to drop the narrative and let sight, sound, smell, texture, and taste take you through the day.
The body remembers gentler than the mind.
Writing in the senses moves you out of the inner critic's house and into the actual one. It produces an entry that is more grounding and less judgmental than 'how was your day' usually gets. It also retrains you to live a little more in your senses tomorrow — which tends to be where calm hides.
Useful on overwhelming days, in seasons of overthinking, before sleep when your head is loud, or as a writing exercise when you don't know where else to start. Wonderful after travel or a season change.

It's surprisingly hard not to slip into evaluation — 'the room was nice', 'lunch was okay'. Every time you catch yourself, swap the adjective for a sensory detail: not 'nice', but 'warm light on the wood floor'. Practice this and the entire entry becomes more accurate.
Saw: the kettle's slow plume of steam against the dark window at six; the colleague who always wears the same green scarf; the moon, faint and high, on the walk home. Heard: rain on the bus roof for ten minutes, a child laughing in the bakery, my own footsteps on the wooden stairs. Smelled: ground coffee, wet wool, garlic frying at five in the evening. Felt: cold doorhandle, warm tea cup, soft sleeve of an old jumper. In my body the day felt like a long exhale after a careful inhale.
