When did you last feel completely present?
mindfulness
Being completely present is rarer than the wellness language pretends. Most of life is half-here, dragged forward or back by something. This prompt asks you to find the last time you genuinely weren't — when, for an hour or twenty minutes, you were fully in the thing you were doing.
Naming when you were fully here makes it easier to be fully here again.
Why this helps
Writing about a moment of real presence shows you the conditions that produced it — usually low-stakes, low-stimulation, and slightly absorbed in something. It also gently breaks the assumption that presence requires meditation or a retreat. Most people's last fully-present moment is more domestic than spiritual.
When to use it
Useful when you've felt scattered for a stretch, when your phone has become a constant interruption, or before deciding whether to keep up a habit that's pulling you out of your life. Also good after a stretch of unusual presence (a holiday, a hike), so you don't lose the data.
How to answer
Pick one specific moment, not a general 'on holiday'.
Describe what you were doing and what was missing (phone, plan).
Note how long it lasted.
Identify what made it possible.
Choose one small condition to reproduce this week.
Other ways to ask the same thing
When were you last entirely in your own life?
What's the last time you forgot to check the time?
When did you last get lost in something in a good way?
If you get stuck
It's tempting to write 'I never am' — that's almost certainly not true; you just haven't noticed. Look for the small ones: peeling an apple, watching a kettle, listening to someone tell a long story you actually wanted to hear. Those are presence too.
Example entry
Sunday afternoon, sorting through a box of old photographs on the floor with my partner. Probably an hour. My phone was in the other room. We weren't trying to 'do' anything — just looking at the pictures, laughing, telling each other small stories about who was in them. What made it possible: nothing scheduled afterwards, no inbox tab open, a shared, slow task. To reproduce this week: one Sunday hour, phones away, doing something low-stakes together.
