Journal prompt
Write about a meal that made you happy today.
mindfulness
Food is a quick way back into your senses. Most of us eat without noticing — phone in one hand, fork in the other — and lose the small pleasure that was right there. This prompt asks you to pick one thing you ate or drank today and write about it like it counts.
It can be a meal, a snack, a perfect tea, a bite of someone else's dessert. Small is allowed.
Why this helps
Recalling a meal slowly retrains your attention toward your senses, which most of us have outsourced to screens. It also reconnects you to one of the most ordinary, reliable pleasures available. Naming it builds the habit of noticing it in the moment, not just in retrospect.
When to use it
Lovely as an end-of-day entry, especially when nothing more dramatic happened. Also good when you're recovering from a stretch of stress-eating or autopilot meals — the prompt gently re-engages your relationship with food.
How to answer
Pick one specific thing you ate or drank.
Describe the first bite — taste, texture, temperature.
Note where you were and who, if anyone, was with you.
Name a feeling, not just a flavour.
Decide if you want to recreate it this week.
Other ways to ask the same thing
Write about something you ate or drank today that you actually enjoyed.
What did your tastebuds thank you for today?
What small bite made the day a bit kinder?
If you get stuck
It's tempting to write about a 'proper' meal at a restaurant when nothing like that happened. Don't. A toast eaten standing up can be the right answer. The point is presence, not prestige.
Example entry
An apple, eaten cold from the fridge while reading on the sofa at three. It was sharp and almost too crisp, which is exactly what I wanted without knowing it. The room was quiet, the cat was on the back of the sofa, the page I was reading was about a place I'd like to visit. The feeling was: small competence. I had bought the apples myself, in the right week, and I was the one enjoying them. I'll buy more on Friday.
